Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA)
hosts Girl-child at Work Day, 25 August 2011
One of the challenges in the retail motor sector is to expose young people to the industry and for them to understand what it actually entails to replace and maintain the approximately 8 million vehicles driving on South Africa’s roads and that these activities create wonderful career opportunities in our industry.
Careers include financial accounting, legal advisors, human resources, engineering, motor vehicle maintenance, motor vehicle sales and support services, automotive body repairers and spray painters.
As a country we also have a huge challenge with the high rate of youth unemployment and MISA is committed to play a leading role in resolving this to the benefit of society in general and the youth in particular.
The MISA Women’s Forum to this end initiated a countrywide Girl-Child at Work Day that took place on Thursday, 25 August 2011 to coincide with national Women’s Month.
The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness among young females (Grades 11 and 12) about career opportunities in the retail motor sector as they are at a very important stage of their lives having to consider possible career choices.
MISA decided to approach various schools to consider partnering with the MISA Women’s Forum in this very important campaign.
They were welcomed at the MISA offices and given some background as to the size and functioning of the retail motor sector, thereafter they were collected by a representative of the dealership where they spent time in the various departments experiencing the ins and outs of a modern dealership and then back to the MISA office for a “de-briefing” session.
We were fortunate to host five girls in Bloemfontein and Durban each who spent the day at Oranje Toyota, Magnis Trucks, Hyundai Umhlanga and McCarthy Toyota Durban North respectively.
The girls hosted in Bloemfontein were Twatasha Reid, Amogelang Kgathole, Katlego Mihi, Kelebogile Cynthia Mokgadi, Sarah Palesa Singonzo and Rejoyce Mohlahlo and are learners at Bloemfontein High School and Louis Botha Technical High School and the girls hosted in Durban were Terita Newport, Lindelwa Makhanya, Nobuhle Sikhosana, Lucie Kapena and Nonkululeko Sithole. They are learners at George Campbell School of Technology.

We need to thank the schools, learners and dealers who participated and for using the opportunity to create a positive experience for the future decision-makers of this country.
The interest shown by dealers was exceptional and very positive, but unfortunately we could not accommodate all due to the prelim exams currently underway and the challenge for the girls to participate for that reason.
The next MISA Girl-Child at Work Day is already being planned for early in 2012 at a time when no exams will be written and then we can really make a big impact.
